- 1843, Jul 15 -- Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty, File R9701.5, William Smith
Celia Smith (age 98), Tallapoosa County, AL resident, applied for a widow's pension for deceased husband Captain William Smith. She testified that Capt. Smith served in the state of South Carolina and Georgia in skirmishes against Indians and Tories, served in the sieges of Augusta, Savannah and Charleston, commanded a mounted Indian spy company and built several forts in Wilkes County, GA. They were married prior to the Revolutionary War in Cumberland County, NC and that William Smith died 27 Nov 1824 in Clark[e] County, AL. Esther McBurnett (age 94), testified on 15 Jul 1843 that she was at the wedding of William and Celia Smith and she lived near the Smiths during the Revolutionary War. Also on 15 Jul 1843, Ruth Buce (age 68, of Tallapoosa County, AL) testified that she was the daughter of Captain William and Celia Smith and that there were four children older than her, to wit: Mary Smith (if living would be 75), Nicholas Smith (dead, would be age 74), Thomas Smith (if living would be 73) and Rachel Smith (age 71). Elijah Jordan, William Crane, Dempsey Jordan and Thomas McBurnett also testified that that were aware of William Smith's service. Elijah Jordan, administrator of Celia Smith Dec'd. (of Tallapoosa County) filed an affidavit in Monroe County, AL in 14 Jun 1852 stating that William Smith died in 1822 in Monroe County, AL: and Celia Smith died 20 Oct 1849 leaving the following children: James Smith (of TX), Thomas Smith (aged 70, of Pike County, AL), Sarah McBurnet, Celia Jourdan and Ruth Buce (age 75) (all of Tallapoosa County, AL).
