Thomas B. Tyson home
Thomas B. Tyson home
From James V. Comer "This vintage photograph taken from the roof of the Moore County Courthouse in Carthage, N.C. features the home of Thomas Bethune Tyson, Sr. who established T. B. Tyson & Son dealers in General Merchandise in Carthage, N.C. in 1841 and founded Tyson & (Alexander) Kelly in 1856 becoming Tyson, Kelly & (William Thomas "Tom") Jones in 1859 becoming Tyson & Jones Buggy Company in 1872 which appears in the center, Carthage Presbyterian Church appears in the upper left background and the Tyson & Jones Buggy Company carriage making building in the upper center and offices in the brick building built in 1897 in the right background. In 1870, Mr. Tyson was the richest man in Moore County, N.C. with $10,000 worth of real estate and $10,000 in personal property (keep in mind the Civil War ended in 1865) able to buy out Kelly's interest. Eugene E. Hamlin "Gene" of Carthage, N.C. submitted this post card for my entry in "Vignettes from the past" column in "The Sanford Herald" which ran on Wednesday, October 16, 1991 on Page 4, Section B. You can still see the back portion of this house from the Carthage, N.C. post office rear parking lot."
