1894, Apr 17 -- Obituary, Carthage Blade [Newspaper], Moore County, NC
"We omitted to mention in last issue the death of Mr. Asa Maness, which occurred at his home on the 5th inst. [Apr], after a short attack of pneumonia. He was 74 years old, and was an old-school farmer. We mean one of those good old fashioned farmers, who made every thing he ate and wore at home, except coffee and sugar. Hence he had accumulated very considerable wealth, and he never made much complaint about hard times. It was said that Mr. Maness had a great deal of money (gold) buried, but we hear that he told his son where it could be found before his death."
