Notes |
- Beacom Britt (1804-1876) was married into the Wallace family but questions still remain unanswered as to exactly how he is connected. Britt family history tells of Beacom Britt traveling back and forth several times between Moore County, NC and TN. Records confirm that he resided in Moore County, NC from 1828-1831, 1850-1853 and resided in TN from 1836-1840 and after 1860. One story also said that Beacom was in TN his family were in western Tennessee in 1833 during the Leonid meteor shower "the night the stars fell" and his mother was so frightened that she returned to North Carolina and vowed never to return.
Britt family sources also state that Beacom Britt married Wallace sisters (who were his 1st cousins) and that these sisters had a brother named Sam. While the name of his 1st wife has never been found in any record, Britt family sources believe that her name was Dallie. His 2nd wife was Deborah/Debbie (1828-1897). I feel strongly that Nathan Wallace and Finity Britt (1st cousin to Beacom) are the most likely candidates to be Deborah's parents. Nathan Wallace lived near Beacom in both Moore County, NC and Henderson County, TN and also had a son named William Samuel "Sam" Wallace.
Information passed down through the Britt family identifies Beacom's 1st wife, Dallie, as a sister to his 2nd wife, Deborah. It is my opinion that she was potentially a close relative to Deborah (such as an aunt or 1st cousin) but probably not her sister. Census records show that Beacom's first wife was born between 1810-1815, which would most likely rule out Nathan Wallace (Born c1800) as the father due to his age. It is much more likely that Dallie was a daughter to Everet Wallace or Nicholas Wallace. Each have an unidentified female child being born in and around 1810-1815. Everet's daughter born between 1810-1815 is listed in his household in the 1820 Census but had moved out by 1830. Beacom and his 1st wife appear together in the 1830 Census. Seemingly more likely but maybe less possible is that Nicholas Wallace was her father. Nicholas moved to Henderson County, TN prior to 1830. Beacom and his 1st wife moved west between 1830-1836 per Census and tax records. It is quite possible he was following his father-in-law and family. The only snag is that the unidentified daughter that is listed in the 1820 Census with Nicholas in Moore County, NC is also listed with him in the 1830 Census in Henderson, TN. While it is not impossible to be listed in two separate households in two separate states during the same year, it is less likely.

My dad was Beacum's great grandson and he said the family did come to West Tenn before the 1811/1812 earthquake and returned to NC.
Beacum and Debra's son Hans was my great granddad and I remember him well. He died in 1941 when I was 6 years old, so much of what I have been told came straight from Hans!
Hans related how a 12 year old came over the Smokies in a covered wagon drawn by 2 oxen, I have thought perhaps it was Beacum and they had his date of birth wrong(since we know his dad, Ryals had already died in NC).
His son Nathan Wesley was my granddad and my dad was William Wyley.
Beacum (or Beacom)was married first to Nathan Wallace's daughter DALLIE, they had either seven or ten kids and she died. He then married her younger sister Debra or Deborah and they had 11 kids together.
Some say Beacum's first wife was NANCY WALLACE BUT SHE MARRIED AMBROSE HART and Nathan Wallace died in their home in Lexington Tn in the 1880's I think.
Beacum was living in McNairy county, Tn in 1862 because I remember Hans telling about him being taken by Beacum to the nearby Shiloh battlefield after the battle and there was a crowd looking and the confederate dead had been buried in a trench and lightly covered. A foot was sticking through the dirt and a man pulled on the boot and the decomposed foot came off inside the boot!
Hans youngest son JOHN HENRY just died a few years ago and he still had a family bible with many names. Two of my nephews interviewed him in the early 80's and put the information on record in the Everett Horn library in Lexington, Tn.
All my line of Britt's back to Beacum was Union supporters, one son, Noah served as a saddler in the 7th Tennessee Cavalry organized in Henderson county Tn. Beacum named a son ABRAHAM LINCOLN IN LEXINGTON IN 1865!
I believe everything I have posted is accurate with the possible exception of the date of the earthquake.
Historians say there were NO white people in west Tenn until at least 1818 so there was possibly another quake later but I can find no evidence of that.
John Henry has a grandson, Tom Britt, who is a long time news anchor man for the ABC channel in Jackson, Tn. Their website could be Googled and it has a picture of Tom.

Our home was in the Palestine area of Henderson county when I was growing up and my dad lived there until he passed away about 10 years ago. Jewel Britt and his dad Elbert Britt were our neighbors. Jewel took my dad to see the grave of Nathan Britt somewhere on Elbert's land (now Jewel's). There was a grave with a rock headstone there believed to mark Beacom's grave if my memory is correct.
