I am the great grandaughter of Raleigh Wallace of Moore Co. NC. He died 5 Dec. 1898 in N.O. LA in Charity Hospital where he had been a patient for 10 mo. His place of burial unknown, probably pauper's grave. The posting at Coker's Chapel findagrave is a memorial. His wife, Elizabeth Spinks Wallace is buried at Coker's Chapel. I have my grandmother's Bible listing Raleigh's birthdate as 17 June, 1827, Moore Co. NC. He & Elizabeth Spinks married 7 Dec., 1848 Bibb Co. AL.

They are found in Cherokee Co. TX, Lauderdale Co. MS, Winn Parish, LA records (census & birth records).

They were separated at the time of his death. Seems he was a colorful person.

I have wondered if John was my Raleigh's father or uncle.I had a cousin who told me Raleigh had a brother named Eli. I also have a copy from the Cherokee Co. TX Historical Commission re: Nathan Wallace, born 4 May, 1818, Moore Co. NC. This Nathan married Mary McCrimmon . There is a reference to Bibb Co. AL, John Wallace, admn. of estate of Isham Wallis, oldest son of John. Nathan and Jesse Smitherman signed on the $2000 bond.

By the way, do you think Raleigh resembles your ancestors? That was his civil war uniform. He was a teamster in the war. Private, Co. A 37 MS Inf. Mother said he was shot in the finger and was trying to "show the injury".

Good Morning...you don't know me, my name is Kelley V. Cowan-Butler, I am part of the Wallace family. I was searching around on Ancestry and came across your site on Raleigh Wallace b. 1827 in NC. Raleigh is my 3rd g-grandfather, I come down from his daughter Sarah Martha. She was my g-grandfathers (Jasper Arthur Deen) mother. I just wanted to see if you would like a picture of him? (Raleigh) I have a painting that was done from an old tin type pic, and would like to share it with you, if you would like.

Let me know if you are unable to view the copy of the painting. This is Rolly, appx 1864, showing wounded hand from the Civil War. He was a good looking man. He also seemed to have liked the ladies, had a hot temper and was remembered by some for his large hands.

This painting is from a relative in Jackson, MS, I believe. It came to me via my mother. I'll pull my files and get you more info. I have some info and census records, but am unable to clarify exactly who is blood and who is not. Do you have father and mother's name? Their origin, etc? There is a verbal story about Rolly, his son, and his temper that I will also copy for you. I'd be glad to send you a better picture of Rolly and hard copies of the family history if you'd like -Elizabeth Stubblefield

Here is part of an email I received from one of my Wallace cousins.

No parent names but it does ties Raleigh and Eli. Hopes this helps. If you come across the parents, please let us know.

"Hi. I don't have Raleigh's parents name, but I do have at least four of his brother's names and year they were born. I don't know if there were other siblings or not, but I do show that they were all born in North Carolina between 1819 and 1829, so the parents must have been there for awhile. This came from the Virginia Wallace Maggard family Bible located in the home of Johnnye Maggard Hughes Jackson, MS. Virginia was the youngest daughter of Elizabeth and Raleigh.

      Nathan Wallace (Wallis) born c.1819 NC - married Mary ? had two daughters:Sarah b.1838 & Lucinda b.1841, Mary E. 6 yoa in 1850 and David H. 3 yoa in 1850

Eli Wallace (Wallis) born c.1822 NC - married Seni(Senea)Davis in April 1846 in Bibb Co., AL

Raleigh Wallace (Wallis) born June 17, 1827 -married Elizabeth Spinks Dec 7,1848 in Bibb Co., AL marriage performed by B.L. Depreise

Thomas Wallace (Wallis) born c.1829 NC - married Fanny Hill on Jan 8, 1848 in Bibb Co., AL

Census records show that Nathan, Eli and Raleigh could not read or write. No comment on Thomas. He seemed to have died in the War between the States."
      Thanks,

      Ken Simpson
