After having been severely wounded on the first day at Gettysburg, Pleasant (Plez) Williams was sent home to recover. During his recovery a neighbor, Lydia Maness (b. 1842), conceived a child. Since Lydia and Plez were never married the child took his mother?s surname - Quincy Addison Maness (15 Mar 1865 - 20 Mar 1922). When the child was five months old Plez paid Lydia $60 and asked her to put her mark to a document releasing him of any further obligation toward her and her bastard child.
