      Eli Melton (22 Jan 1859 - 9 Apr 1930), Son of James Melton (1833-1888) and Emmoline Davis (1838-1916) married Mary Jane Davis (10 Aug 1863 - 14 Apr 1930) in 1886. Eli farmed and taught school with his wife at the Melton School which became Sheffield's store. They had 11 children, all born in Steeds (Bensalem), Moore County, NC. Mary Jane was Emmoline's 1st cousin. There is a photograph of the living children and their parents taken in the 1920s on the Ancestry site.

      1. John Lexie Melton (15 March 1887-24 Oct 1956) married Mattie E "Minnie" Brown (1890-1954). They had a daughter Mabel Eunice Melton (1916-1994). They lived in Laurinburg, Scotland County, NC.

      2. James Oscar Melton (9 Dec 1888-9 Nov 1932), never married and remained in the home with his parents. Buried in Dover Baptist Church Cemetary.

      3. Mamie Melton (6 Aug 1890 - abt 1890), died in infancy.

      4. William Carey Melton (17 Nov 1891-12 Sep 1913), no record of a marriage, but I need to get to Carthage and check on his death certificate.

      5. Robert Lacey Melton (5 Dec 1893-4 May 1971) 1st marriage 22 Aug 1917 in Montgomery County to Carrie Cornelia Thomas (1900-1987) which produced 3 children, Louis C (or Lewis) b. 1920, Harold Lloyd (1924-1959). and Robert "Bobby" b. 1925. 2nd marriage to Bessie Mae Zimmerman (1914-1995) in 1946. Robert died in Alamance County, NC.

      6. Colon Clark Melton (9 Sep 1895-15 Mar 1959), never married, farmed part of his father's farm he bought probably in 1920s, became a Jehovah's Witness late in life and traveled around the county meeting people. He is buried in the Dover Baptist Church Cemetary with his parents. When I was a child it was a family tradition for my grandparents, parents, and the children to spend the 4th of July picking blackberries in his fields. Then my mother canned them to make blackberry cobblers for dessert after Sunday dinners all winter long.

      7. George Alson "Allison" Melton (6 Sep 1897-16 Mar 1952) married Eva Baker (1903-1964). They lived in Hoke County, NC. They had 6 children, James Issac (1922-2002), Arthur George (1923-1983), Helon M (1925- ), Howard M (1927- ), Dorthie L (1928- ), and Hasel (1929- )

      9. Stephen Melton (1 Sep 1901-12 Jun 1969) married Myrtle Turner (1905-1987) on 20 Apr 1924 in High Point, NC. There is a photograph of them taken in Feb 1924 when they were courting. Stephen and Myrtle had 3 children and adopted another. The names are Sheldon Gordon (1926-1990) my father, Doris Melton (1927-1974), Nancy Carol (1929-living), and his adopted son was Larry Dean b. 1945 (Doris's son).

      10. Gertrude "Gertie" Mae Melton (29 Jan 1904-09 Dec 1983) had daughter Gladys Opal Melton (1924-1996), married William Henry Robinson (1897-1926) and had twin daughters, Willie Mae Robinson (1929-1929) and Wilma (1929-1997). On William Henry Robinson's death certificate the cause of death was that he was shot dead. 2nd marriage took place 15 Dec 1933 to Charles Milton Mashburn (1898-1990) and they had a son born in 1937 who was still living as of 2 years ago.

      11. Theodore "Ted" Melton (27 Aug 1906-4 Feb 1987) married Annie Mae Bennett (1907-1987). They had one daughter, Patricia "Patsy" Ann (1933- ) Pat was living 10 years ago, but I have not been able to get in touch with her since her husband died.
