    Notes
    • 1841, Mar 24 -- Special to the Observer, Fayetteville Observer, Fayetteville, NC
Mr. Hale: One of the most heart rending circumstances that has ever been witnessed occurred in this neighborhood a few days since. On the evening of the 11th instant(Mar 11, 1841), a little girl about 10 year old, though small, the daughter of Mr. Wallace, asked its mother to let her go to the old place ( a place they formerly lived at), and drive the cow home. The good mother at first refused, but after some persuading, consented. The little girl set off; night soon arrived, but no news of her. The alarm was immediately given, several person hunted nearly all night ( which was very rainy) without success; in the morning a goodly number of persons assembled, searched all day but to no effect; the second, third and fourth days, from fifty to seventy persons searched diligently. Late in the evening of the fourth, she was found about a mile and half from home, (had been overlooked), a lifeless corpse! The scene was indescribable. To see a human being lying in the wild woods a lifeless corpse is the most melancholy picture your humble servant ever witnessed, and one I hope never again to behold. Be so good as to give the above a place in your columns.

*Note - Josiah T. Phillips was postmaster at Temperance Hill Post Office

*Note - I believe Nancy to be a granddaughter of Everet Wallace. I feel very strongly that her father was most likely Enoch or Joseph, based on the fact that both have an unaccounted for daughter in the 1840 census that is listed between 10-15 years old. Nancy's birthdate (Mar 1830) on her tombstone at Flint Hill Baptist Church most likely rules out Isham (dau Sarah was born Jan 1830) and John (son Josiah was born Feb 1830). Other sons of Everet, Nathan and Nicholas, can also be ruled out based on the fact the Nicholas moved to TN before 1830 and Nathan had a daughter named Nancy was was born c1823-1828.
