Johann Heinrich Seitz "Henry Sides"
May 2005 - Here is some recent information which is of great interest to those who are descendants of Johann Heinrich Seitz. This is compliments of Nellie Sides Scheuler, with mention of all the other researchers who had a great part in this new info.
"Exciting new information has been found recently relating to the origins of Johann Heinrich Seitz, Dorothea Elizabeth and Andreas Felsinger in Germany.
I was first contacted by Clark Sitze several months ago. He put me in touch with Fred Moretz from NC. Fred has done a lot of research on several families including Seitz/Felsinger who migrated from the area of Calbach, Budingen, Hessen, Germany aboard the ship Queen Elizabeth 16 September 1738, arriving in Philadelphia, PA. They came with families having the surnames of Sharpe, Smith Deor, Weitzel, Weber, Moretz, Sheffer, Star and Reece.
During the voyage there were many who died. The year of 1738 has been called the Year of the Avenging Angels due to the many deaths which occurred during several voyages of various ships to America. Fred gave me some copies of church documents from the film mentioned here.
According to Fred, the Seitz Families lived in the area of Calbach, Hessen, Germany for many years. The Felsinger Families lived there for a shorter time, coming mainly from the area of Nidda, Hessen, Germany.
I was also given information from Wayne Bonner He provided me with names and documents and verified the information from Fred Moretz. This information was obtained from church records on LDS film; FLH INTL Film, Reel 1, 1197020.
Felsinger Family: Variations of surname found in Calbach, Hessen, Germany church records:
Feltsinger, Feltzinger, Feltsing and Voltzinger
1. Dorothea Elizabeth Feltsing (no er here) daughter of Andreas and his wife, Catherina baptized 15 February 1713, Dorothea Elizabeth Meyer, sponsor, page 235 LDS Film, Reel 1, 1197020.
2. Anna Margaretha Feltsinger daughter of Johann Michael and his wife Anna Catherina baptized 14 February 1727.
3. Johann Michael Feltsinger son of Casper and his wife Anna Catherina baptized 12 September 1728.
Seitz Family:
1. Johann Heinrich baptized 07 June 1711, son of Johann Heinrich Seitz, citizen and his wife, Amalia. Hauptmann Forell from Kalbach and his wife, Gertraub, sponsors. Page 208, LDS Film, Reel 1, 1197020.
2. Johann Henrich Seitz proclamation of marriage 07 January 1734, single, citizen, legitimate son of Johann Henrich Seitz and Dorothea, legitimate daughter of Andreas Voltzinger, citizen.
Page 227, LDS Film, Reel 1, 1197020.
3. Andreas baptized 17 October 1734, son of Johann Henrich Seitz, citizen and his wife Dorothea. Andreas Feltzinger, citizen, sponsor. Page 419, LDS Film, Reel 1, 1197020.
This is only a small portion from the film. There may be much more there for our interest. Hopefully someone who can read the film (written in German) will be found who is able to help us transcribe more from these documents. I decided to put this out now for the benefit of all who are researching these surnames.
A special thanks is given to the generous help of Clark Sitze, Fred Moretz and Wayne Bonner.

Johann Heinrich Seitz/Henry Sides
The following is what had been the collective thoughts on Johann Heinrich Seitz/Henry Sides prior to the wonderful info you read above.
Much has been written about Johann Heinrich Seitz. There are some....shall we say...."interesting" claims made regarding the time period that predates his arrival to America. I am not aware of any documentary evidence that substantiates these accounts. Some of this information has found it's way into the Seitz genealogy community, into various publications, correspondence, surname mailing lists, internet postings, gedcom files, and various internet family websites. Unfortunately, as I said, none of the accounts have any corroborating sources.
Here is some new information recently posted on the internet regarding the origins and parentage of Johann Heinrich Seitz. There are some obvious inconsistencies:
Johann Heinrich Seitz: Birth Date: 10 Mar 1708/1712 Place: Rhodt, Pfalz, Germany Death Date: 1766 Place:Walker Co. Alabama
His parents are listed as:
Hans Christoph Seitz Birth Date: 3 Jul 1642 Rhodt, Pfalz, Germany Death Date: 5 Jul 1709 Rhodt, Pfalz, Germany and Anna Maria Kressler: Birth Date: Mar 1645 in Rhodt, Pfalz, Germany. Death Date: Abt 1740 Lincoln City, Lincoln, North Carolina
If he was born in 1708, then he could have been the son of Hans Christoph Seitz, who died 5 Jul 1709. Johann Heinrich Seitz's age was given as 26 when he arrived on the "Queen Elizabeth" in 1738, making his birth year roughly 1712, which if accurate, places his birth 3 years after Hans Christoph's death.
The death date of 1766 for Johann Heinrich Seitz listed above is consistent with info mentioned in the will of Andreas Felsinger. However, the place of death is listed as Walker Co. AL, which is actually the death place of his reputed son Johann Heinrich Seitz "Henry Sides".
Anna Maria Kessler would have been approximately 65 years old when Johann Heinrich Seitz was born, probably too old to have been his mother. According to this info nearly the age of 95 when she died. I am curious as to how she came to arrive in America, if her husband had died 1709, in Europe, did she then arrive on the "Queen Elizabeth" with Johann Heinrich Seitz and the Felsingers? Did she arrive with another of her children? If so, when?
Other children of Hans Christoph and Anna Maria Kressler Seitz were:
1. Georg Christoph Seitz: Birth Date: 7 Aug 1686 in Rhodt, Pfalz, Germany, Death Date: 28 Mar 1736 Rhodt, Pfalz, Germany.
2. Anna Catherina Seitz: Birth Date: 28 Jun 1694 Rhodt, Pfalz, Germany, Death Date: in Rhodt, Pfalz, Germany.
3. Maria Magdalena Seitz: Birth Date: 24 Dec 1700 in Rhodt, Pfalz, Germany, Death Date: 7 Feb 1755 in Rhodt, Pfalz, Germany.
4. Maria Margaretha Seitz: Birth Date: 25 Aug 1703 in Rhodt, Pfalz, Germany, Death Date: Rhodt, Pfalz, Germany.
Johann Heinrich's birthyear of 1712 is 26 years after the oldest child Georg Christoph, and some 9 years after the last child Maria Margaretha. Quite a spread in ages.
Below are some additional items found regarding Johann Heinrich Seitz.
"Johann Heinrich Seitz was born abt 1712, and died 1765-6. He was 17 years old when he left the upper Rhine Valley of Oberleft abt. 1729, with his father Johann Heinrich Seitz Sr. They migrated to Switzerland, then Holland where they remained about 9 years. Johann Heinrich Seitz met and married Dorothea Elizabeth Felsinger, daughter of Andreas and Anna Margareta Felsinger, sometime before arriving in America."
Another account states:
"The Seitz surname is Nordic in origin, having been originally "Sijdzes". This name is very closely identified with the Frisians, those peoples that inhabit principally the province of Friesland in the Netherlands, and the Frisian islands in the North Sea. The Sijdzes are said to be a very old Frisian family that lived in and around the town of Dokkum in the province of Friesland. The name Sijdzes evolved over time, due to the Germanic influence of settling later in the Rhine River Valley. It's later forms being Sigitz, Sigize, then Seitz.
It is from the Netherlands that the forebears of Johann Heinrich Seitz originated. They eventually settled in the Upper Rhine River Valley. Johann Heinrich Seitz Jr., son of Johann Heinrich Seitz Sr., was born about 1712, but the location is not known. In 1729 when he was about 17 years old, he and his parents left the upper Rhine River Valley, which was in the area between Mainz, Germany, and Basel, Switzerland. They were Palatines fleeing war, harsh winters, heavy taxation and religious persecution. They then migrated first to Switzerland then on to Holland. He was in these two areas for approximately nine years.
When he was about 21 years old he married Dorothea Elizabeth Felsinger the daughter of Andreas and Anna Margaretha Felsinger. Their first son, Johann Heinrich Seitz 3rd. was born in 1734 in Holland and they remained there until he was four years old. He and his wife left the Netherlands along with his Father-in-law, Andreas Felsinger, and Mother-in-law Anna Margaretha Felsinger and arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the 16th of September 1738 on the Queen Elizabeth.
Johann Heinrich and wife Dorothea had at least one child, a son Johann Heinrich Seitz III, born abt. 1734. They first settled in the township of Lower Saucon, in Bucks, now Northampton Co. PA. Their other children included three daughters, one whose name is unknown, another who married John K. Cagle, another, Catherina who married Henry Cagle, another who married Gaspar Clubb. They had four other sons, Peter, Adam, Jacob, and George".
(Of course we now know that George and Adam were not sons of Johann Heinrich and Dorothea Felsinger Seitz, nor was Adam a brother of Johann Heinrich Seitz "Henry Sides" either).
Another item to mention is that these accounts above mention that Dorothea was the daughter of Andreas and Anna Margaretha Felsinger. According to Source: Donna R. Irish, in Pennsylvania German Marriages, Baltimore: Genealogical Publ Co, 1982:
Tohickon Reformed Church, Bedminster Twp, Bucks Co, PA. marriages, Andrew Feltzinger and Margaret Wagner were married 14 July, 1761. So apparently Anna Margaret was his second wife.
Probably the earliest documentary evidence that exists for Johann Heinrich Seitz, or "Henry Sides" as he was more commonly known, was on a ship's passenger list of the "Queen Elizabeth" that arrived in Philadelphia on 16 September 1738, from Rotterdam. Henry was listed as "Jno. Henrick Sides" and his age was given as 26 years. Listed among the other passengers were Andreas Felsinger, the father of Henry's wife Dorothea Elizabeth.
As discussed on the previous page, the next mention of Henry in records is when he is found among the list of men in Captain Samuel Cobron's militia company in the Catawba River area, dating from about 1753-55. At this same time period, he is found in Anson Co. NC land records probably the first dating from 1754.
Anson Co. NC - 24 September 1754 - Henry Sides granted 300 acres on Killian's Creek.
Anson Co. NC - 13 October 1756; Crown Patent. book 15 p. 196 - Henry Sides granted an additional 140 acres on Killian's Creek.
Henry is mentioned in the will of Andreas Felsinger, dated 8 July, 1766, proved 07 December, 1767 in Lower Saucon Township, Bucks Co. PA. Will Book 1, pg. 31. In this will, Felsinger mentions "...my daughter Dorothea the wife of John Henry Seitz, now residing in the province of North Carolina....".
Johann Heinrich Seitz "Henry Sides" was probably dead by July of 1766, the date Andreas Felsinger's will was written. In the will he makes the following statement. "......if her husband is dead according to a letter from her.....then Dorothea shall have an equal part and share with the rest of my lawful issue....".
It does appear that he was definitely dead by 1770. It was in that year, that Dorothea Elizabeth, sons Peter and Henry Sides, John K. Cagle, Henry Cagle, and Gaspar Clubb all executed a power of attorney which granted Simon Hart the power to go to Saucon Township in Bucks Co. PA to act on their behalf in claiming their share of Andreas Felsinger's estate.
It is believed that John K. Cagle, Henry Cagle, and Gaspar Clubb were included in the power of attorney on the basis that they were sons-in-law of Henry and Dorothea Elizabeth Sides, each married to one of their daughters.
A tentative list of children for Henry and Dorothea Felsinger Sides are:
1. Andrew b. abt. 1740 who married Margaret----. Resided in Mecklenburg, Cabarrus Co. NC. Died before 20 Jan 1806. (There is no hard evidence that Andrew was indeed the son of Henry and Dorothea. Andrew is generally believed to have been a son of Henry based largely on the will of Andreas Felsinger.
Update: May 2005- The information listed in the microfilmed records of Budingen and Calbach area's Evangelist church Buedingen, Kirchenbuch, 1631-1942 mentions Andreas Seitz...
Andreas Seitz is listed as "baptized 17 October 1734". on of Johann Henrich Seitz, citizen and his wife Dorothea. Andreas Feltzinger, citizen, sponsor. Page 419, LDS Film, Reel 1, 1197020.
This would seem to indicate that the Andreas mentioned in Felsinger's will as the grandson/godson was indeed Andrew Sides, son of Henry Sides.
2. Caterena who married Henry Cagle.
3. Unknown daughter, possibly named Margaretha, who married Gaspar Clubb
4. Unknown daughter, who married John K. Cagle.
5. Jacob Seitz abt. 1736-1808. He married Eve-----. Remained in Lincoln Co. NC.
6. Henry Sides (Johann Heinrich Seitz). 1734-1830. This is believed to be the Henry Sides who went to AL in 1818 with his sons and their families, and settled in Walker Co. AL.
Although this Henry is generally accepted to be the son of Henry and Dorothea Sides, there is some disagreement on this. There was apparently another Henry Sides, approximately the same age residing in the same area of NC. Some researchers claim that it was the Henry Sides who remained in NC that was actually the son of Henry and Dorothea Sides.
7. Peter Seitz/Sides Born abt. 1755, who married Elizabeth----(believed to have been a Zimmerman/Carpenter). Peter and his family removed to the area in and around Madison Co. MO about 1813. Died between 1830-40 in Madison Co. MO.
