This could be a situation where Henry Maness fathered some or all of these children out of wedlock. YDNA from a male descendant of Thomas McSwain Maness matches the YDNA of males from the Hunsucker family. That could indicate a different father for Thomas. Thomas Maness was married numerous times. On his 1874 marriage certificate to Nancy Pool, he listed his parents as George and Polly Maness; 1895 marriage to Martha Mashburn, he listed his parents and Geo. Hunsucker (dead) and Polly Maness (dead); 1901 marriage to Sarah Brady, he listed his parents as unknown and Polly Maness.
