1833, Nov 5 -- Revolutionary War Pensions, File #W3996, George Horner and Priscilla Horner
George Horner [age 72 as of next Feb 7th] and resident of Moore County, NC applied for a pension. He was born 7 Feb. 1762 in Orange County, NC & in 1780 moved to Randolph County, NC to live with his half brother William Horner. Later moved back to Orange County and in 1823 he moved to Moore County, NC. John Williams and James Melton [Moore County residents] filed affidavits of support. His twin brother Thomas Horner, veteran, lived in Orange County in 1833. Widow Priscilla Horner applied Jul 28, 1846 and listed Horner's death date as Aug 2. 1844. She stated that she [Priscilla Windslow] married Horner in Guilford County, NC on 12 May or 12 Aug. 1784 (both dates given). Mary Claves filed affidavit of support. Priscilla died Jan 5, 1853. Son George Washington Horner, the oldest son [Moore County resident] stated he was born Feb 24, 1784. [Editor's note: I believe that Priscilla was George's 2nd wife and that she and son George Washington Horner misstated birth and marriage dates. I believe this relates to the fact that they were concerned that as the 2nd wife she would not be entitled to his pension and they may not have known that his first wife died in 1839 in Dickson County, TN]

    Notes
    • In Moore County, during the early 1800's, there were two large households of Meltons that each had a number of children born between 1790-1810. These two men, James and Ansel, were believed to be first cousins but may have been brothers. James [1774-1840] was listed in the 1800, 1810 and 1820 census with a total of six sons born between 1790-1810. Ansel [1773-aft 1850] was listed in the 1810, 1820, and 1830 census with a total of five sons born between 1794-1820.

It has been passed down through Ansel's family tradition that he was the father of Jesse [b.1794-1800], William [b.1800-1804], Isaiah [b.1800-1810], Robert [b.1805] and John [b.1814].

It is fairly certain that James was the father of Robert [b. 1803], James [b.1805], and Ansel [b.1804-10]. It is also my belief that James was the father of Henry [b.1800] and Hiram [b.1804-1810]. It is possible that he was the father of John Melton [b. bef 1794] but less likely.

I am also fairly certain that Lydia Melton [b.1799], wife of John Williams was James' daughter based on the close proximity of the two families.
