Captain John McKenzie served under General Donald McDonald at the battle of Moore's Creek bridge) and at Cross Creek (now Fayetteville). This was part of the War of the Regulation.
Union Presbyterian Church was organized in 1797 with the following elders: Walter Macbeth, Zachariah Graham, Duncan Patterson, John Blue, and Colonel A McDougal. Later, John McKenzie, Donald Blue, and Martin McPherson were made elders. The first church, a log house, was erected in 1798 on the property of Archibald Reed on Crane's Creek, by a spring, across the field from the Present site of the church. Soon afterwards a larger log church was built on property given by Mrs. Eliza B. Rowan in the present bounds of the cemetery. A log session house was also built nearby, which was used during the lifetime of the three church buildings. (This church is still called Union Presbyterian Church and is located on Union Church Road in Vass, N C.)
