Notes |
- Elizabeth "Betsy" Wallace (1808 - aft 1860) was the second wife of Jeremiah Williams (b. 1775) and according to Williams Family researchers they had a very large family consisting of the following children: Raleigh, Jeremiah D., Mary, Enoch Spinks, Lorenzo D., Amanda Jane, Franey, David Anderson, Caty, Ann, James Wesley, Joseph and Bryant. According to Williams family sources, Jeremiah and Besty left Moore County, NC and traveled to western TN where most of their family was raised. Jeremiah is said to have traveled back and forth several times. Their children and descendants can be found in Census data from Madison, McNairy and Henderson County, TN. Several of them moved on further to TX and OK.
Jeremiah Williams' 1st wife is reported to be Florence DeLaney (1774/1780 - bef 1825). They had the following children: Jeremiah Jr., Elizabeth, John, Matthew, Henry, George and Isaac. It is possible that Jeremiah was born in VA as three of his children (Enoch Spinks, David Anderson and Isaac) reported in the 1880 Census that their father was born in VA. The remaining surviving children listed that he born in NC. It is my belief that Jeremiah Williams was the son of George and Ann Williams. This is based upon three pieces of circumstantial evidence. (1) Everet Wallace, Jeremiah's future father-in-law is a witness to the will of George Williams in 1797, (2) Everet Wallace, Jeremiah Williams and George Williams all lived very near each other just south of the present day town of Robbins, and (3) there are two Jeremiah Williams in upper Moore County around this time, but one Jeremiah is consistently found in the area stated above and the other is found consistently in a different area located north of the present day town of Robbins.
There is a Susanna Williams (ID# I31885) buried in an old Williams family cemetery located on the 50 acre tract of land originally granted to George Williams'. This cemetery has 12-15 tombstones but Susanna's is the only one that was readable by Tony Parker back in the early 1970's. Tony's transcription showed Susanna, wife of J.W. Williams Dec 19, 1782-Oct 29, 1829. Because of the cemetery location, it would lead one to speculate that she married one of George Williams' sons. The property owners have always been told that Jeremiah Williams was buried there as well. If this is indeed true, chances are that his first wife may have been Susanna instead of Florence DeLaney. In my opinion she is either the first wife of Jeremiah Williams or the wife of his brother James Williams.
Williams family lore also states that Jeremiah Williams lived across the street from the Byrd Wallace cemetery (Wallace Family Cemetery #81). This is very close to the 100 acres grant that Jeremiah received in 1815. Interesting to note is that while the Byrd Wallace cemetery contains a number of graves for Byrd Wallace and his descendants, there is a small tombstone that is much older than the rest. Tony Parker transcribed this stone in the mid 1970's as follows: Jeremiah Williams d. 1831 and ---- Williams d. 1834. Tony believed that this tombstone represented the deaths of two children rather than one. It is quite possible that this child/children are children or grandchildren of Jeremiah Williams (ID# 06311).
Based on photos taken in 2010, it is very difficult to decipher the inscriptions at this date. It appears to say .... Williams son of Jeremiah Williams and ....th Williams. The dates 1831 and January 1834 are clearly visible on the stone. It is quite possible that this child was born in 1831 and died in January 1834. Because of the inability to read much of the middle part of the stone, it is unclear if this stone is for one child or for two.
It is my belief that if Jeremiah is buried in Moore County, NC it is most likely that he was buried at one of the two family cemeteries listed above.
