I am a direct descendant of Nathaniel Melton b. 4/7/1760 Chatham County, NC; died 11/21/1851, Morgan County, Tenn.
I have seen so many different versions of the parentage, marriage and children of this Nathaniel.
From his Revolutionary War Service record he was residing in Cumberland Co, NC when he entered service in Oct 1779. He served until 1781 with Gen. Greene's army. In his amended statement for pension of April 16, 1833, he stated he was born 4/7/1760 in Chatham County, NC.
Note that portions of Moore county were formed from Chatham.
Marriage records of Moore County, NC, indicate he married Fereby Barrott, security, Nicholas Newton. Fereby Newton being married previously. Marriage in November 1785.
He is listed in the 1790 and 1800 census for Moore County, NC.
His is then listed in Grainger County, Tenn; 1805 Tax List; 1810 census.
By 1817 he is listed on Captain Stephens company tax list for Roane County, Tenn.
No census records for 1820
He is on the 1830, 1840 and 1850 census for Morgan County, Tenn.
At the time of his death, a portion of his RWS pension was left and at Morgan County court in March 1852, his death date is noted as Nov 21, 1851 and that he left the following children:
William
John
Isham
Mahala
Martin (my line)
One of the witnesses was Lewis Fairchild who married his daughter Mahala Melona Melton.
There is also a Fereby Morgan who lives with him in the 1850 census. I can not find an 1860 record for her; nor is she listed as a surviving child. Because of the name and birth date, I assume she is his daughter, born c. 1806, NC.
I have seen Ester b. SC listed as a daughter. This does not seem likely as there is no record of this Nathaniel being in South Carolina. There were other Meltons that migrated from Edgefield District to Roane county that she may belong to. I have also seen Austin Philip and Robert attributed to him. This is also unlikely and is apparently based on wrong info in "Coming to America"..
I suspect that his father was Nathaniel Sr, son of Robert, but have no proof. If anyone has found a will or other records for Nathaniel, Sr., please advise. Nathan, son of Robert, left a will and he is not listed, Nathan Jr., is, or rather his heirs.
